Law enforcement officers will be conducting a drunken driving checkpoint later this month in Lathrop.
The Lathrop Police Department, a division of the San Joaquin County Sheriff Department, will conduct the checkpoint 7 p.m. Aug. 31 to 3 a.m. Sept. 1 on River Islands Parkway west of Manthey Road.
The effort is part of a two-year program aimed at reducing drunken driving violations and crashes. A grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is paying for the checkpoint.
Lathrop police hope to use the checkpoint to educate motorists about the negative effects of drunken driving and to apprehend drunken drivers. The goal is to prevent traffic injuries and death by preventing alcohol-related crashes.
Motorists were urged by the Lathrop Police Department to not drink and drive, but instead use a designated driver or call for a taxi, friend or relative if they have had too much to drink.
